In the past Palmera has implemented and supported humanitarian projects primarily in Sri Lanka. We target the most marginalised and isolated areas of Sri Lanka. We will continue to develop a network and specialty in this region. Due to the current situation in Sri Lanka, where the North East is isolated from NGO relief, it is becoming increasingly difficult for funds and emergency relief to reach these areas.
However we are expanding, we also work in Australia and other countries including Cambodia. We have a Cambodia volunteer program starting in July 2009 as well as an innovative teacher training project and an income creation project to aid sustainabilty in our partner school.
We will continue to focus on our special interests in income creation, health and education.
Palmera believes strongly that effective use of funds is through the support of sustainable humanitarian projects and we realise that poverty alleviation is via empowerment of communities, families and the individual.
Emergency relief will be funded with a focus towards sustainable development at the earliest possible stage.
Palmera raises awareness of the humanitarian crisis currently facing the regions in which we work. We are committed to remaining non-politically aligned. We will, however, be advocates for the humanitarian situation that this community finds themselves victims of. Our actions against violence will include building awareness, providing emergency aid, advocating and facilitating peaceful resolution of conflict and international engagement.
Through keeping the public aware, we hope to maintain a connection between our world and theirs and trigger action in individuals who are able to make a significant difference.
On a global scale we hope to influence community leaders into implementing systems to protect and uplift those most disadvantaged in a region and country as their role in permanent changes to human rights advocacy is vital. We aspire to help make poverty history by influencing government targeted funding to these areas.
Our awareness campaigns to date have been through the selling of merchandise, card and letter writing campaigns, the distribution of e-bulletins, conducting open dialogues an debates and knowledge share initiatives.
Knowledge is power. Bridging the knowledge gap is essential in enabling communities to break free from the poverty cycle. Palmera aims to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from those who have unique skill sets to those who lack the relevant skills to create self sufficiency within their communities.
Through our Volunteer programs Palmera has transferred skills ranging from accounting fundamentals, IT, legal, marketing, language, education and music. Our first knowledge share project involved developing an English syllabus which was implemented by our volunteers in our Sri Lanka volunteer program. Since 2007 we have been involved in project analysis and planning for an English School in Cambodia.
We also believe real experiences in the third world, not only positively impact vulnerable communities, but trigger life long commitments to these worthy projects and start a chain reaction of interest in the volunteers personal network.
To raise funds we hold fundraising events, promote ongoing funding via Palmera Partners and market merchandise such as Care Cards. Please contact us if you are interested in buying our merchandise.
