Being six days into our adventure, we are now getting acclimatised to the Khmer way of life, their local customs, the weather and being bounced around in the back of a tuk tuk.
The longer I spend here, the more and more appealing the simple yet gratifying life of the Khmer people appears. Though lacking in the materialistic luxuries we westerners so dearly cling to, the Khmer people seem to find happiness and solitude in the more important things in life such as strong family bonds.
We all shared mixed emotions as we approached Christmas day. Being many miles from home, we weren’t sure how the day would be spent and if there would be any celebration at all! Our concerns were quickly dismissed. We spent an amazing day with the children at VDPCA. The school was kind enough to allow us to partake in their Christmas celebrations.
We sang, danced, distributed Santa’s presents, and ate ungodly amounts of candy. This Christmas will be one which wont be forgotten soon. The joy of spending Christmas with these children was priceless. In the Christmas spirit, we bought watches for all of the teachers at the school. They were elated with their gifts (as none of them had ever worn a watch before!).
All in all, it has been a world-wind of emotion. I can only guess what next week has in store for us!
